Byrna CL vs. Byrna CL-XL: Is the 0.75" Length Difference Worth the Upgrade?

Comparing the Byrna CL and CL-XL: A 20-Year Expert's Guide

At Discount Paintball, we’ve been testing and selling less-lethal gear since 2002. One of the most common questions we get in our Elk Grove Village shop is: "What is the actual difference between the Byrna CL and the new CL-XL?"

Both models utilize Byrna’s famous Pull-Pierce technology, allowing you to keep a CO2 cartridge in the launcher indefinitely without it leaking. But while they look similar, the performance and "carry-ability" profiles are distinct.

Watch the detailed breakdown of the Byrna CL-XL to see the 410 FPS muzzle velocity and 7+1 round capacity in action. This video demonstrates the patented Pull-Pierce technology and the new 12g CO2 system that provides up to 17 shots per cartridge. Learn how the re-engineered frame offers better grip and compatibility with most aftermarket micro red dot sights.

Size Matters: Understanding the Length Difference

The primary trade-off between these two models is size versus performance. The Byrna CL-XL is 0.75 inches longer than the standard CL. While that might sound small, in the world of concealed carry, every fraction of an inch counts. That extra length allows the CL-XL to use the more common 12g CO2 cartridges, giving you higher velocity and nearly double the shots per cartridge (up to 17 shots).

Note: both versions can use the 5 round or 7+1 round magazines. Using the 7+1 round magazine makes either version much taller.

Expert Verdict: Which Should You Choose?

Choose the Byrna CL if your priority is absolute deep concealment. If it needs to fit in a pocket or a small glove box where space is at a premium, the shorter profile is your best bet.

Choose the Byrna CL-XL if you can spare that extra 3/4 of an inch allowing 12 gram co2, and a larger 7+1 round capacity.

As an authorized dealer since 2002, Discount Paintball stocks the full Byrna lineup at our Elk Grove Village storefront and online.
